PGCE PROCESS WORK- MODULE 1- UNIT 2 TASK 6- REFLECTION ON TEACHING AND IM

PGCE PROCESS WORK- MODULE 1- UNIT 2 TASK 6

How can international-mindedness and/or cosmopolitanism could be promoted through the curriculum which you currently teach?

I will answer this with regard to that last International school I taught in.

I feel that the true spirit of IM can only really be inherent in a school if it is adopted by all the staff and it’s governing bodies and applies to the staff as well as the pupils. In my last school I believe that, although this was something promoted in the school’s mission statement as an aim for the pupils, staff were not given this same consideration.

There was inequality in the way that staff were paid and this did not always correspond to their qualifications or experience. Some subjects were valued more than others within the school and therefore the teachers of those subjects tended to be the ones who were better paid and whose department had the largest budget for resources. This meant that there was dissatisfaction amongst the staff and consequently this did not provide the best working environment.

If teaching staff are not respected then this can reflect in their teaching and pupils can detect an atmosphere of malaise which is not conducive to helping foster IM.

Consequently I feel that the school aught to have addressed these inequalities. I also feel that the very fact that pupils often have to pay to go to an International school can go against the spirit of IM, which promotes equal opportunities for all as one of its key factors. I am in support of state-funded schools being able to offer the same type of education that is available to fee paying students.
